About the Chicago Arts District
The history of the Chicago Arts District reaches back to the early 1960s when John and Annelies Podmajersky started to revitalize the Pilsen East neighborhood with innovative urban planning. They converted dilapidated residential and commercial buildings into artists' lofts and studios and transformed disused alleyways into lush gardens. These distinctive spaces and exceptional environments have provided inspiration to the thousands of artists who have lived and worked here over the past four decades.
The Chicago Arts District now encompasses several contiguous blocks of live and work space for artists, galleries and other creative retailers, and exhibition space for special events and performances.

The Treasure of Ulysses Davis
Through May 15
In the early 1950s, Ulysses Davis (1914-1990) began barbering and carving in a shop he built behind his home in Savannah, Georgia. During his lifetime he created more than 300 works, producing a varied, but unified body of wood sculpture that reflects his deep faith, humor, and dignity. The work can be divided into several major categories: religious images, patriotism, works influenced by African forms, abstract decorative objects and portraits of African and American leaders to include his masterwork, a group of forty carved busts of all the U.S. presidents through George H.W. Bush. The Treasure of Ulysses Davis is organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The retrospective features 109 pieces, including 78 from the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation of Savannah, which acquired most of Davis’s work after he died.

exhibition design by studio BASAR
May 2 - June 13, 2010
Opening reception: May 2, 2010, 4 -7 p.m. The artists will be present.
The Renaissance Society presents The Seductiveness of the Interval, a project presented at the Romanian Pavilion of the 2009 Venice Biennale. The work of three Romanian artists–Stefan Constantinescu, Andrea Faciu and Ciprian Muresan–is exhibited in a two-story architectural structure designed specifically for that purpose by studio BASAR. Together, the artists explore themes of exile, the human capacity for cruelty, and hope. Although the artists' works are distinct in terms of form and content, they are united by a structure conceived as a stage set where the viewer is invited to reflect on the individual works and the viewing experience itself.
